AIDA MOONSHOT PROPOSAL
About
The AIDA theme aims to establish a sustainable Nordic research and innovation hub for advanced X‑ray and neutron imaging, integrating sample preparation, instrumentation and method development, spectral nano‑imaging, phase‑contrast microtomography, data processing, visualization, and modelling.
To accelerate this mission, AIDA invites proposals for moonshot projects.
What is a moonshot project?
A moonshot project is a high‑risk, high‑reward research and innovation initiative that aims to achieve a breakthrough in X‑ray or neutron imaging far beyond the current state of the art. It targets challenges that cannot be solved through incremental improvements or disciplinary silos. A moonshot project leverages the unique capabilities of MAX IV, ESS, and emerging deep‑tech infrastructures to open entirely new scientific or technological frontiers, create methods or platforms that could redefine whole research fields, and catalyze long‑term community growth. These projects embrace uncertainty, push technological and scientific boundaries, and aim for transformative impact on Nordic and global science.
A moonshot project within AIDA is a bold, high‑risk, high‑reward initiative to achieve breakthroughs in X‑ray or neutron imaging. It addresses challenges that require new paradigms in imaging physics, data analysis, multimodal workflows, instrumentation, or cross‑disciplinary science.
A moonshot project leverages the unique capabilities of MAX IV, ESS, and emerging deep‑tech infrastructures to open new scientific and technological frontiers, create transformative methods or platforms, and support long‑term community development. These projects embrace uncertainty, push boundaries, and aim for significant impact on Nordic and global science.
The benefits and impact - Why join?
Within AIDA, we aim to develop complete imaging pipelines.
Moonshot projects will drive scientific excellence, method development, educational value, and long‑term community building. Through this, we aim to identify science cases where advances in imaging techniques can generate the greatest societal impact over time.
Review process and selection criteria:
The received moonshot proposals will be reviewed by the AIDA‑appointed committee. The proposals will be assessed based on scientific impact and alignment with the aims of the AIDA theme.
