Welcome to a workshop with a focus on developing projects to promote early science at ESS by Swedish researchers in the area of neutron imaging at the ODIN instrument!
When: 16 September 2025
Where: LINXS, The Loop, Rydbergs torg 4, Lund, Sweden
Organisers: LINXS, ESS
Contact: Stephen Hall, stephen.hall@solid.lth.se
About
The outcome of the workshop will be the identification of 2-3 key areas that could lead to early science results from Swedish use of ODIN by optimising the synergies between Swedish materials research interests and the unique capabilities of ODIN.
These projects should build on active Swedish research in "material processes and processing” that can benefit from, develop and showcase the possibilities made available by the ODIN instrument. The projects will have a materials research question as the focus, but can include method development and/or in-situ environment development, as required, and should also have a good chance of producing results already in the first years of operation as well as laying the foundations for future science at ESS.
This means that the projects should build on the strengths of the ESS source and ODIN instrument, i.e., ToF imaging where access to wavelength resolved imaging is key (this could include Bragg-edge imaging, exploitation of wavelength etc.) (https://ess.eu/instruments/odin).
We invite interested parties to register and also, if you would like, to propose a short talk on your research interests in the workshop’s context by giving a tentative title. It would also be interesting for us to have a brief (couple of lines) outline of possible science questions that you could investigate using ODIN@ESS plus any developments that could be involved (technique, sample environment…)
Depending on the interest to give a presentation, we may need to make a selection, but we will aim to have talks that provide a good overview of potential science areas for follow-up project development. A key focus of the day will be on discussions, hence the talks will aim to be a platform for those discussions.
