About
Understanding and mitigating large-scale viral outbreaks and future pandemics is one of the most pressing global challenges of our time. Addressing this challenge requires close collaboration between virologists and experts in advanced experimental techniques. X-ray- and neutron-based methods offer unique opportunities to probe viral structures, interactions, and dynamics at relevant length and time scales, providing insights that are difficult to obtain by other means.
The aim of Pandemics and Alertness is to strengthen interaction and collaboration between virologists and scientists using neutrons, X-rays, and complementary techniques, across disciplines and infrastructures. A key objective is to increase awareness, competence, and accessibility among virologists regarding the use of large-scale X-ray and neutron facilities, as an essential step towards improved pandemic preparedness. By fostering cross-disciplinary exchange, training, and shared methodologies, the theme seeks to enable the effective integration of X-ray and neutron sources into rapid pandemic response strategies. Ultimately, the goal is to establish sustainable structures and to develop a practical “handbook” outlining options for deploying these advanced infrastructures in future crisis situations.
