In focus: women in the soft matter scattering community - YRI Soft Matter

Celebrating research in soft matter scattering

an event organised by LINXS Young researchers in soft matter

When: 25 September, 2026

Where: LINXS, The Loop, Rydbergs torg 4, Lund, Sweden

Organisers: Young Researchers’ Initiative - Soft Matter, main coordinator Anna Stephens (Lund University)

About

Join us for a day of celebrating women in the soft matter scattering community! The event features a keynote talk by Joanna Behrman (University of Copenhagen), a cultural historian working at the intersection of science, gender, and education, soft matter scattering talks from early-career researchers, and a careers panel with inspiring women working in the field. There will also be plenty of opportunities to mingle with other early-career scientists.

Welcome and introduction by Charlotta Turner, incoming Dean of the Faculty of Science at Lund University.

The event is open to everyone, regardless of gender.

Title: What Does it Mean to be a Woman in Science?: Lessons from History

Joanna Behrman is a cultural historian working at the intersection of science, gender, and education. She is currently a postdoc in the Department of Science Education at the University of Copenhagen, where she studies networks of historical women in physics.

Joanna holds a PhD in the History of Science and Technology from Johns Hopkins University, a Bachelor's in Physics from Harvard University, and a Master's in the History of Science from the University of Chicago. Her book in progress, A New History of American Women in Physics, reveals the flourishing lives of American female physicists prior to WWII and is currently under contract with the University of Pittsburgh Press.
