MAX IV User Support and Enablement function [MUSE] is a working title, used here as a muse—inspiration—for what the project aims to establish: a new connection between the textile and design fields and advanced X-ray methods.

The textile industry is undergoing a transition towards a more resilient society. This requires textile design and innovation based on new perspectives on sustainability, circularity, and the development of materials and processes. A central, yet still insufficiently explored, opportunity lies in understanding the most fundamental components and structures of textiles. We are curious about rethinking existing logics and exploring future ways of designing, making and understanding textiles.

Textiles, fibres and circular materials represent an emerging field for synchrotron-based research. Significant questions remain around material transformation, circularity and sustainability, yet few established pathways currently connect the textile and design community to large-scale research infrastructures such as MAX IV. Designers, textile researchers and material innovators have had limited opportunities to explore what advanced X-ray methods might reveal about their materials and their expressive and functional possibilities. At the same time, MAX IV has had limited insight into the specific questions and needs of this community.

This kick-off workshop brings together textile and design researchers, industry partners and synchrotron scientists to begin building a pathway between these fields. Rather than starting with predefined solutions, we want to explore questions emerging from the encounter between textile practice and advanced materials research, and connect these questions with relevant methods and expertise at MAX IV.

The motivation is both to ask new questions about existing needs—for example, why do we still clean our textiles in water?—and to explore what becomes possible when we understand materials from a different scale.
