Neutrons, neutrons, neutrons! LINXS hosts Swedish Neutron Week 2021 in May

This year, LINXS will host Swedish Neutron Week, taking place in May. The week will bring together and enhance the Swedish community and research involving neutron techniques. The event is organised in collaboration with SNSS (Swedish Neutron Scattering Society) and SwedNess.

– Generally, LINXS’ mission is to promote and highlight the x-ray and neutron methods, experiments and tools most appropriate to do science. However, a special focus, like on neutrons at the Swedish Neutron Week, is a good opportunity to showcase what’s going on in a  specific area of Swedish research and to maintain and grow the associated community, says Stephen Hall, LINXS Director.

The event includes a focus on science using neutron techniques, as well as method development, in terms of instrumentation, data analysis and theory/simulation. It is open for participation and contributions from academic, large-scale facility, research institute and industry researchers to discuss the latest developments in neutron-related science in Sweden and beyond.

ESS researchers and ESS science is a focus

– We will also highlight some of the researchers and the science around ESS. We will have presentations from ESS scientists about their own research - these are scientists with their own research interests beyond the building of beamlines and experimental tools. This will be a possibility to present how the scientists at ESS can be involved in the community and how their double roles, as both researchers and working closely with the user experience of ESS, can be of great value in terms of advancing the whole field.

LINXS can contribute towards creating engagement

Stephen Hall hopes that LINXS’ track record in organising participatory online events will contribute towards Swedish Neutron Week being as engaging as possible, in spite of its online format. LINXS can also access a wide network of researchers who might not be part of the already established community.

– Organising these types of events strengthens LINXS’ role as an institute that can support universities and research organisations across Sweden to work strategically and long-term in promoting the use of x-ray and neutron science. Working collaboratively around specific events is an important step to systematically grow networks and users, exchange experiences and to create foundations for cutting edge research, utilising the potential that ESS and MAX IV present nationally and internationally, he concludes.
