Winning Beamtime: A Reviewer and Beamline Scientist’s Guide to Proposal Writing

When: April 29, 10:30–12.00
Where: LINXS, workshop room on the 3rd floor (The Loop, Rydbergs torg 4, 224 84), with digital participation possibility via Zoom.
Speaker: Andrey Shavorskiy, MAX IV

Abstract: This seminar, led by an experienced beamline scientist, provides a practical introduction to effective proposal writing for synchrotron and large-scale research facilities. Participants will gain insight into how proposals are evaluated, with emphasis on scientific clarity, feasibility, and alignment with beamline capabilities. The session will cover key components of a strong proposal, including formulating a compelling research question, designing appropriate experimental strategies, and clearly communicating expected outcomes. Drawing on real-world examples and reviewer perspectives, the seminar aims to help researchers improve their chances of securing beamtime by crafting concise, impactful, and technically sound proposals. This seminar is particularly valuable for early-career researchers and first-time applicants seeking to navigate the proposal submission process with confidence.

Bio: Andrey holds a PhD in Chemistry (Catalysis), during which he has been granted numerous beamtimes at multiple synchrotrons in Europe and across the Atlantic. During his Postdoc time at a soft X-ray spectroscopy beamline, he has been providing technical and scientific support to user groups, including both experienced and novice users. Since 2015, Andrey has been actively involved in the user operations and instrument development of the HIPPIE beamline. He has been a member of several proposal review committees at multiple synchrotrons.
