Title: Protein Production Sweden: High-quality services within protein production and purification, delivering proteins for many and diverse research projects

Abstract

Protein Production Sweden: High-quality services within protein production and purification, delivering proteins for many and diverse research projects.

Protein Production Sweden (PPS) is a national research infrastructure established in 2022, that offers services within protein production and purification for both Swedish and international researchers, from both academia and companies. Well-established protein production platforms at five Swedish universities collaborate to form the infrastructure and together they offer their combined expertise and competence as services within protein production to the research community. PPS performs protein expression in six different expression systems (E. coli, P. pastoris, Insect cells (BEVS), Plant cells, Mammalian cells and Cell-free expression), with protein purification and basic quality control being performed at all sites.

PPS delivers proteins for many diverse research areas and technologies, including virus-related research and experiments using X-ray and neutron-sources, based on the needs of the researchers and the planned experiments.

Researchers can easily get access to PPS’ services via a joint web-portal, and support is offered through the whole process of protein production and purification, starting from project counselling and design to quality control, or for any single/multiple step(s) in the process, according to the scheme below.

PPS is a broad state-of-the-art protein production and purification infrastructure. In its first four years, 2022-2025, more than 1300 protein batches were delivered to numerous research projects. In this webinar, PPS’ director will present the services available and how to access them, followed by some examples of virus-related proteins that the infrastructure has produced so far.

Biography

Malin Bäckström received her first degree in biochemistry and her PhD in medical microbiology, working with vaccine research, from University of Gothenburg. After a short post-doc in Cambridge, UK, she worked for many years in the mucin biology group at the University of Gothenburg, focusing on the production of these large, complex, and highly glycosylated proteins. In parallel, her group started the Mammalian Protein Expression (MPE) core facility for protein production in mammalian cells, and since 2015 she has focused on helping other researchers obtain the proteins they need for their research. Since 2022, MPE has joined forces with other Swedish protein production platforms and received joint funding from the Swedish Research Council to create the national infrastructure Protein Production Sweden (PPS), for which she is now Director.
