Neutron Reflectometry and Supported Lipid Bilayers - SMILE

Welcome to an introduction lecture and tutorial on neutron reflectometry, exploring its principles, applications, and data analysis approaches.

When: 31 August 2026

Where: LINXS, The Loop, Rydbergs torg 4, 224 84, Lund, Sweden

About

An Introduction lecture on neutron reflectometry (NR) will cover basic theory principles an overview of current instrumentation and latest developments at the ESS, and some applications of NR to soft matter and biology.

The lecture will be followed by a tutorial on NR data analysis using the Refnx software both in the GUI and Jupyter notebook mode. The tutorial will show how to analyse NR data from supported lipid bilayers as models of biological membranes.

Speaker

Name: Alessandra Luchini

Bio: Alessandra is presently an associate professore at the University of Perugia. After postdocs at ILL, Grenoble and University of Copenhagen Dr Alessandra Luchini obtained position as lead instrument scientist for the construction of the ESTIA neutron reflectometer first at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Villigen, Switzerland (2021) and subsequently at the European Spallation Source (ESS) ERIC, Lund, Sweden (2022).

Her research activities cover the structural investigation of membranes and the interplay between membrane proteins and lipids with various surface sensitive techniques, including neutron reflectometry, as well as the development of data analysis methods for combining neutron reflectometry and molecular dynamic simulations.
