Professor of Molecular Virology, Head of Division of Virology and Immunology, Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden
Gerald McInerney is professor of molecular virology at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. He has built a strong, internationally recognized research program in the cell biology of virus infection and its implications for viral replication and immune responses. His research focusses on the cell biology of alphavirus infection. He was first to show that virus infection induces the formation of RNA stress granules in infected cells and went on to elucidate the mechanism by which alphaviruses counteract this cellular defence pathway. He and his group were very active during the COVID19 pandemic, developing neutralizing antibodies and contributing to many projects in diagnostics, serology, antiviral and vaccine development and other diverse research projects.
