Board Member

Jane Hvolbæk Nielsen is Director General of the European Spallation Source (ESS), a European intergovernmental research laboratory under construction in Lund, Sweden.

Before joining ESS, she served as Head of the Department of Physics at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), with responsibility for more than 300 staff and for the department’s research strategy, infrastructure development and educational quality.

She holds a PhD in Physics from DTU and an MSc in Electrical Engineering. Her academic appointments at DTU have included Associate Professor and Professor with special responsibilities in Nanoscience and Outreach. Her board experience includes service on the Fund for the Promotion of International Mobility for Research, initiated by the Villum Foundation, and previously on the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

In 2019, she was appointed Denmark’s scientific delegate to the ESS Council.
